This Office was created in the year 1985 in a rented House. Land had been allotted measuring 4.30 Hectares bounded on the east by a small stream , on the south a road to Vetenary Office , on the west and on the North PWD Complex .

This Project was specially prepared for ecological Restoration of Cherrapunjee and to overcome the difficulties in Afforestation work of this area. The scheme includes production of quality Planting Materials with maximum local species (Fast growing). Under this scheme the Afforestation activities has been categorized into five components. Categorization into different components is intended to rationalized the effort and expenditure as different types of land would need varying level of efforts and inputs. Accordingly cost of Afforestation is different for different components. One of the reasons for the failure of the Afforestation in the past has been inadequate treatment or input in Afforestation on the land where condition for establishment of seedlings are adverse.

This scheme has been implemented during the year 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10. Maintenance work will continue up to the 3rd year. The average survival percentage is 90% up to September 2010. Fire protection is the main work to concentrate on these plantations especially the difficult site areas. National bamboo
Mission

This scheme is implemented under Sohra Civil Sub Division by Cherrapunjee Range, Social Forestry through National Bamboo Mission - Joint Forest Management Committee. The fund provided in this scheme is for planting of certified Bamboo species and its maintenance for three to four years only. The scheme can be implemented in the village land, community land and also private individual land.
Before constituting the JFM Committee land survey is very important so as to know first the location, area, suitability for bamboo plantation etc.
The hilly area of Sohra is a very difficult site for bamboo plantation, few small bamboo clumps are seen growing and that too mostly in the wind shade site. On this account the bamboo plantation sites are selected on the slope and down areas but the land holding system here are belongs to individual or private land where many individual are having and area from One to Three Hectares. On this account the location of Bamboo Plantations spread to number of villages of the Sub Division.
After the completion of the land survey the General committee of land owners/ Beneficiaries was called and then the executive members, Chairman for the Executive committee were selected where the Member Secretary of the committee is the Range Forest Officer. Hence the National Bamboo Mission - Joint Forest Management Committee. Was formed consisting altogether 7 ( Seven ) members

.........The scheme under National Afforestation programme is implemented through Joint Forest Management Committee consisting 9 (Nine) members. 7 (Seven) members from the village itself including the chairman, 1 (One) member from the District Council and 1 (One) member from the Range Forest Office as member Secretary of this Committee. Besides afforestation this scheme provide fund for Entry Point Activity (EPA).The committee can propose and prepare the estimate for the non forestry activities within the amount earmarked in the scheme needed by the village for the welfare of the village people. Soil and water conservation (SMC) Work is also included in this scheme.

Thangkharang Park:

ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY

Thangkharang is a small hamlet in the southern aspect of Sohra (Cherrapunjee) East Khasi Hills District, located at a distance of about 66 Km away (by road) from Shillong. During the pre Independence period, Khasi traders who were trading with erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) used this place as a night halt. During their halt, they usually lit a campfire and smoked the fishes brought from East Pakistan (‘Thang’ means smoke or burn and ‘Kharang’ means smoked fish) .Hence this place is called as ‘Thang-kharang’.

Establishment of Thangkharang Park:- The Forest and Environment Department through its Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills during the year 1992-93 took initiative by consulting with the local the Sirdar, the Headman and village elders of the Mawsmai Elaka to spare the forest land on the western end of the village to develop it as a recreational park .The primary objective was to protect and maintain the natural landscape and to develop and preserve its scenic beauty. The Department and the Elaka signed the agreement on 29th June 1993. The Department took over 5.50 hectares of land from the Elaka. After three years of development, the Park was inaugurated and opened to public on 29th June 1996.

Aims and Objectives :- The Forest Department established the Park as an Environmental-cum Recreational centre to create awareness among the people on importance of Forests and Environment and need for its conservation for human life- and more important to imbibe in the people’s mind that “ Nothing is redundant in nature’’.

Management:-Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills has been managing the Park through Range Officer Cherrapunjee. The field Staffs who perform daily duties includes a one Forester, one Forest guards, four mali and ten casual labourers engaged on daily wages basis to look after all and maintenances of the Park. The Range Forest Officer conducts regular inspection and monitoring over the staffs performances and submits the revenue report including the number of visitors to the Division every month.

Infrastructure: - The whole area of the Park has been fenced partly by iron grills, and Chain link. Other infrastructure inside the Park includes View-point, Rain-Shelters, Footpath, Children –Play-things and flowers gardens. Shrubs (e.g. Cinnamomum, Ligustrum, Myrica, Schima, Castanopsis, Quercus, Syzygium spp, etc.) of different species have also been planted in addition to existing vegetation grown naturally in the area. Beside the Green House was constructed for keeping varieties of orchid species (e.g. Dendrobium, Lady’s slipper, Coelogyne, Arudina spp.) including Hybrids like Cymbidium etc, seasonal flowers, Pitcher plant and indoor plants.

Tourists /visitors: - The flow of tourists and visitors to Thangkharang Park kept on increasing every year. The peak season of visitors is from the month of October to February. The number of tourists and visitors that visited Thangkharang Park recorded for the last five years w.e.f.1st April 2010 to 31st March 2015 are 6,17,510 Nos .

5. Advertisement/Movie Cam - Rs 2000/- each(Enhanced from Rs.1000 /- With effect from 10th April 2015)

The revenue collected for the last five years from 1st April 2010 to 31st March 2015 is Rs. 32,52,318/- (Rupees : Thirty Two Lakh Fifty Two Thousand Three Hundred Eighteen) only.

Livelihood and Amenities: - Before establishment of the park few families migrated from the village for livelihood to other parts of the district and some to Shillong. Lately, the Park has generated income by providing employment opportunities in which about twenty families are now deriving benefit and earning their livelihood from the Park. The villagers have established Tea Stalls, Snack Shops, Fast Food, Restaurants, etc. near the Park. The parking fee @ Rs.10/- for light vehicle and Rs.20/- for heavy vehicle is being collected by the Village Durbar. The Department has been engaging the local people from time to time for various construction and maintenance works in the Park.

The sylvan tranquility of Thangkharang Park will always remain in the minds of the visitors from where they can enjoy the scenic and serene beauty of Kynrem Falls and the plains of Bangladesh on a bright sunny day. The visitors can also hear the rhythmic sound of the waterfalls during monsoon. One can also enjoy walking through a Forest trail in the western part of the Park where tranquility and pleasantness of the area can be felt by nature’s lover.

A visitor to Sohra should not miss to visit Thangkharang Park. Its memory remains etched and beckoned to return again and again. Thangkharang Park may also be described an ideal place for Eco-Tourism.
