Role and Functions :


 

The Department of Information & Public Relations play a vital role in publicizing the various schemes and projects undertaken by the government for the welfare of the people. Its function may be briefly indicated as below:-

  1. Dissemination of authentic information to the masses on the developmental schemes and projects in uplifting their socio-economic conditions.
  2. Assisting the administration in maintaining law and order during elections and other matters as assigned from time to time.
  3. Keeping close contact with the members of the media both print and electronic.
  4. Doling out of Press Releases, Press Notes to the local media as required from time to time.
  5. Coverage of VIPs and VVIPs visits.
  6. Arrangement of sound systems.
  7. Also declared by the central government as the Nodal Agency for Early Warning System under the Disaster Risk Mangement Programme .
  8. Compilation and documentation of success stories and schemes implemented by various government agencies at all levels.
  9. Government announcements from time to time.

Organisational setup :


 

At the field levels,the District Public Relations Officers head the District and the Sub-Divisional Public Relations Officers head the Sub-Division units respectively and is assisted by one U.D.A,an L.D.A.Besides,we have one operator,one handyman,one peon cum chowkidar,Driver who is presently engaged at the Directorate and one casual worker.

Reports / Publication :


Keeping in view with the ever changing information and statistics every year we have one Publication unit at the directorate which publishes Diaries, Telephone Directories, Meghalaya Calendars, Information booklets etc. This unit also brings out  quarterly magazine entitled “the Meghalaya Chronicle”.


Advertisements:According  to  the  new  advertisement  Policy  that  has  been  adopted  by  the  Government  of  Meghalaya,all government  advertisements  meant  for  publication  in  the  newspaper  should  be  sent  to  the  Directorate  which  is  the  nodal  authority  for  suitable  issue  to  the  newspapers.No  advertisement  will be  issue  directly to  any newspaper  by  any  department  or  their  subordinate  offices.

Therefore all official advertisements intended for publication in the newspaper may please be sent to the Directorate indicating in their forwarding Memos, the numbers of newspapers namely daily,bi-weekly- or weekly where the advertisement is desired to be published and the numbers of insertion in each newspaper.

The Directorate will select the names of the newspaper from the panel of appoved newspapers and the practice of sending advertisements directly to the newspapers for publication as well as stating the names of the newspaper by the department to which they were to be sent should be discontinued.

In the absence of our own department plans and schemes we have to focus mainly on other developmental departments activities. The department is entrusted with the responsibility of organising Special Inter-active Programmes once a year at all field levels.
