World Water Day observed at Sohra on the 22 nd March, 2013




As part of observance of the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013, the District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM) East Khasi Hills, Shillong in collaboration with the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer ( C),Sohra Sub-Division organized a programme on World Water Day Celebrations 2013 on the 22nd March at Vivekananda Hall, Ram Krishna Mission, Sohra wherein the Additional Chief Secretary ,Government of Meghalaya, Shri. Barkos Warjri (I.A.S) was the Chief guest.


The  programme  started  with  a  Save  Water  March which  was participated  by  school  children  carrying different  slogans  which  convey  the  message  to  save  water  started  from  Rikhana  playground  and  culminated  at  Vivekananda  Hall, Ram Krishna  Mission, Sohra.


Speaking  on  the occasion, Mr.Warjri  highlighted  upon  the  importance  of  water &  its  value  and   its  daily  application   in  our  everyday  life  in terms  of  life  and  environment. He  stressed  upon  the  need  of  scientific  ways  of  mining in  order  to  protect  streams  and  rivulets  from  being  polluted . He  called  upon the  student  community  to  work  together  in   preservation  of  environment for  sustainable  growth  and  development. ”Water  is  life, Forest  needs  to be  con-serve  and  preserve”, he  concluded.


In  his  introductory  speech, Sanjay  Goyal, Deputy  Commissioner  of  East  Khasi  Hills, Shillong  said  that  Water  Crisis  is  the  issue  of  the  day. He  appeals  to  the  people  to  conserve  water  in  the  form  of  Rain  water  harvesting  and  to  work  together  in  order  to  sustain  water  cooperation  worldwide.


Shri. F.Syiem, Syiem  of  Sohra  also  spoke  on  this  occasion.


Hand-washing, Prize  distribution  and  songs  were  the  order  of  the  day. 


Earlier  Shri.C.V.D.Diengdoh, Sub-Divisional  Officer (C ), Sohra  Sub-Division  delivered  the  welome  address  while  Shri.K.D.Talukdar, SE (PHE) Rural  Circle & Member  Secretary, DWSM, East  Khasi Hills  Shillong  offered  the  vote  of  thanks.
